"Dear Doctor, I have given Alfred the medicine you gave me except some of the four drops. After taking the medicine a few days he appeared to get better. But at present I think is as bad off or worse than he was when I was down. His mouth [seems ?] equally as bad or worse. The whole of his jaw teeth on the right side is loose and the roof of his mouth appears to be eating away so that you can see the roots of the teeth. On the left side some of his teeth is loose. His face keeps constantly swelled and at present he complains of a misery in his face and eyes. His feet & legs is also very much swollen. His breath has become to have an offensive smell. He is undoubtedly in the worst condition that I have ever saw any person from the effects of medicine. I think there will be no other chance but to take out some or all of his teeth on the right side and part on the left. I wish you to come & see him and take out his teeth if you think it proper. I am afraid to take him out or I would bring him to you. Under present circumstances I think it would be dangerous to expose him to the cold air.
