ILLNESSDecember 1892"In Dec 1892, I have forgotten the day," I was employed at Rogers Planing Mill, Peoria, Ill. I was their engineer and was on top the boiler making repairs. In descending the ladder a rung broke and I fell heavily astraddle the rung next below injuring my right groin. I discovered it had caused rupture & I went to Dr J W Powell for treatment. In Aug 1895 I was employed at the Peoria Grape Sugar Sugar Co assisting their engineer in making extensive repairs and when lifting in place section of a large fly wheel I felt a keen smarting pain in the lower point of left groin but did not discover I was ruptured there until two or three days later. When I was first injured in right side Dr Powell only advised a truss so when injured this second time I went to no doctor but bought a double truss. Some eighteen months ago Dr Powell died. About this time I was sick and called Dr R W Baker who treated me and only knows of this injury by what I told him. No one outside my immediate family and one son-in-law knows anything further about this injury or ever saw it except I have stated to a very few acquaintances."
