Because she was dying, she asked family friends Flether and Mary (Coble) McCullough to take the children. The McCulloughs were not able to have children of their own. The oldest child May Irene Deaton wanted to return to her mother's family. The McCulloughs adopted William Beverly and Claudius Ellen.
