Mattie had been caring for _______ Johnson, who had tuberculosis. Mattie divorced Bethel, she married ________ Johnson because it wasn't good to have 3 children and not be married in wilds of Idaho. She contracted tuberculosis, probably from _________ Johnson. When she realized that she was dying, Mattie brought the 3 surviving kids back to NC using her ex-husband's railroad pass. Because she was dying, she asked family friends Flether and Mary (Coble) McCullough to take the children. The McCulloughs were not able to have children of their own.
