MISC Bethel worked building the railroad in Idaho and Wyoming. When they weren't living in a train car, they were at Pocatello, ID or in Kemmerer, WY. Mattie had been caring for _______ Johnson, who had tuberculosis. Mattie divorced Bethel, she married ________ Johnson because it wasn't good to have 3 children and not be married in wilds of Idaho. She contracted tuberculosis, probably from _________ Johnson. When she realized that she was dying, Mattie brought the 3 surviving kids back to NC using her ex-husband's railroad pass. Because she was dying, she asked family friends Flether and Mary (Coble) McCullough to take the children. The McCulloughs were not able to have children of their own. The oldest child May Irene Deaton wanted to return to her mother's family. The McCulloughs adopted William Beverly and Claudius Ellen. Mattie passed away a few months after her return to NC.; Pocatello, Bannock, Idaho, United States
